Muringa - Junior Module

“A great team for a great start”

This is where the learning begins, as we guide and support our newest learners on their learning journey. We work closely with our learners and whānau, as they get to know what school life is all about and what it means to be a learner with HEART at Pareawa Banks Avenue School. In Muringa we have two learning pods: Kiwakiwa and Poataniwha.

Learning to be a learner is an exciting and challenging adventure and one we trust all our learners will enjoy being part of as they grow and flourish in their new learning environment. In Muringa we have experienced practitioners who will work alongside your child to maximise their learning opportunities.

Although children will work in all eight areas of the curriculum the main focus in the early years is on teaching the foundation skills, strategies and knowledge in the areas of numeracy, reading and writing.

Our Discovery programme, which we refer to as Learning through HEART, provides opportunities for children to be self-managing learners by following their specific interests and mixing with other children within the team. A focus for these discovery sessions is a strong emphasis on developing the Key Competencies from the National Curriculum document and on developing our own learning assets in order to build collaborative partnerships with peers so that each learner can communicate effectively and enjoy working together with others.

These competencies are:
  • Thinking.
  • Relating to others.
  • Using language, symbols and texts.
  • Managing self.
  • Participating and contributing.

The Learning Assets are:
  • I am a self manager.
  • I am a collaborator.
  • I am a thinker.
  • I am a communicator.
  • I am a researcher.
