Kia ora and welcome back everyone, happy new year to you all. We hope you have had a relaxing and fun filled holiday and are ready for 2022 and all the adventures and learning that awaits.
We begin the year with our annual Beginning of Year Learning Conversations where we are hoping to meet with every child and their family (even if you are returning to the same class). This gives us the opportunity to meet together as whānau, child and teacher to korero and reflect, setting our children up for the year ahead.
To make a booking please go to: www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter our school code: d9kw5. Conversations will be 15 minutes, unless your child is a new entrant in The Nest whose conversations will be 20 minutes. Please leave one slot free between your bookings so you can make your way to the next class. Bookings can be made up until 12pm on Thursday 27 January.

Today we held our 2021 graduation ceremony with Juanita Hepi - the Children’s University Coordinator. We couldn’t be prouder of our students who embraced the event and loved the experience of wearing gowns, sashes and mortarboards. Over 40 students graduated with hours ranging from 30 up to 208, and all get to keep their 2021 sash. This programme takes place in children’s own time to extend their learning - roll on 2022! |

Learning Celebration
26 November 2021
Due to COVID regulations, we could not have our annual family picnic and learning celebration. However, we adapted and instead of the evening picnic children enjoyed a sausages sizzle and ice blocks for lunch and an exciting afternoon of bouncy castles, wacky bikes, face painting and gliding on wheels!
What a fun way to end the week!

Banks Ave Staff Visit New School19 November 2021
There was much anticipation, today, as the staff at Banks Ave walked onto our new school site to see the progress that has been made on our new school build. Staff members have not been on site before so there was a buzz of excitement as they walked through our new hall, the classroom pods and the staffroom. For some areas of the school, the rooms were in the initial stages of build, so it took some figuring out to see which rooms were which. Staff could be heard singing, you guessed it 'Celebrate Good Times'. After such a long wait, the move is getting closer! |

This is a great chance for all of our children and teachers to learn about the Living World in an authentic science context. At the end of each season, we’ll have the opportunity to harvest our honey and make beeswax wraps as the - Busy Bees! |

Wahoo! National Champions!30 July 2021
We have just received the news that we achieved 1st Place Nationally for our 'Sasaki Tumanako' Wearable Arts Entry for the Junior Section. 2nd and 3rd place went to Breens Intermediate. Feedback from the judges: Demonstrating a maturity and thoughtfulness beyond their years, the students responsible for this garment should be very proud; it was truly heartwarming to see the way you have taken the paper crane and used it ‘en masse’ for maximum effect to create something so beautiful with an important message behind it. Congratulations to the children of Dudley and Jen and Jan for all their hardworking on creating this. |

From Heartbeat Media Journalist for Team Miro: Hazel Y Today 45 children headed to Canterbury University for an experience of University life! We were welcomed into the lecture theatre where we watched a video about the University. We had a briefing and then we got started with a Pasifika session. We even got to try on some Victorian outfits. We had lunch and headed to the Antarctic session. We got to stand in front of a Thermal camera and found out that it was -40 celcuis in Antarctica. We tried on some clothes. They were so warm! We then had a tour of the library, where we did a scavenger hunt. In here we made 1 pin each and then participated in a challenge. - who could build the biggest tower. The winners were Chris and Grace. They both got to design their own t-shirt. We even got to see a science lab with a disco ball and fairy lights! Overall it was a really fun day. |

Junior Module Gymnastics
23 June 2021
From Heartbeat Media Journalist for Team Kahikatea: Joel
Throughout this week children from Team Kahikatea have been attending a gymnastics session at the Christchurch School of Gymnastics.
This involves crawling and balancing on beams, jumping on a trampoline and flipping into a foam pit and climbing straight up a rope. The children even got to do an obstacle course. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There were no unhappy faces in sight. Everyone was doing amazing. One child even got very close to climbing the top of the rope.
“I really like the beams because they are soft and bouncy.” said Lennix, age 7.
“I liked the trampolines because it was fun.” said Anikait, aged 7.
From Heartbeat Media Journalist for Team Totara: Skyla
Room 1 and 2 went on a trip to the Christchurch School of Gymnastics. They did things such as bars, beam, rope and mat. They did stretches and completed obstacles. Everyone joined in, learning many new skills and had a great time.
Phoenix likes swinging on bars and jumping into the foam pit!

Think Pink Week
Friday 21 May
Standing up against bullying is a big thing! Everybody should be an up-stander ALL OF THE TIME if they see bullying. People in most countries around the world celebrate Pink Shirt Day by dressing up in pink to stop bullying and to make the world a better place. So everybody, make sure you throw kindness around like confetti!
At Banks Ave we decided to celebrate Pink Shirt Day by having a Pink Think Week. Our HEART leaders (Liam, Alex, Race & Reta) planned various activities across the week. You might have noticed that our school was decorated with pink balloons, pink banners and kind messages were even written in chalk on the pavements. One day it was compliment day, where our HEART leaders gave out compliment stickers to the children. Teachers even gave compliment notes to other teachers! We took photos of children's kindness quotes in pink photo frames and on Friday everybody came to school dressed in pink. Even our caretaker, Mike and his lawnmower was dressed in pink! To end the week, a Think Pink Parade was held. What a great pink week we have had, so don't forget always, always think Pink!

CSO Tumahana Performance
It is a sunny Monday and Team Kahikatea and Team Miro are heading off to see the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra perform at the Town Hall. When we arrive there were a lot of schools there. The lovely sound of the music playing made it seem like a movie it was so realistic. Overall we rate this a 10 out of 10!
The story was about how the world was created. The narrator came on and off the stage telling us bits of the story. There were lights at the back of the stage showed different shapes and silhouttes. Beams of light represented the stars in the night sky. Afterwards everyone was applauding the cast. Remembering 22 February 2011
22 February 2021
We came together to remember the event 10 years ago that changed our lives, our community and our city forever. It was a bittersweet moment as we looked back and remembered the devastation, the horror and the pain caused by the 2011 earthquakes. Everybody has a story to tell and a memory that doesn’t fade. However, out of that horrific event that rocked our city and rocked our souls came much good. We can feel pride as we remember how we pulled together and supported each other through those dark days and those dark months that followed. Communities pulled together, neighbours who had never spoken to each other were there for each other. Support in many forms poured into Christchurch from across the country and across the world.
I especially want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank all the school staff across Canterbury, who were suddenly thrown into a situation, on that day 10 years ago, that no drill or practice had ever prepared them for. Staff acted with love, common sense, empathy and HEART as they sat huddled, comforting and holding children, waiting for distraught parents to arrive and collect their tamariki. Teachers, learning assistants, office staff and others were selfless in their actions.
Ten years have passed and for many the journey has not been easy with botched earthquake repairs, ongoing anxiety and in our case a school that has yet to be re-built.
However, as I write this I have faith and I have hope and I feel gratitude. I am grateful for the progress that has been made, for the community that I belong to and for the amazing team I work with. I have faith that as a school, as a community and as a city we will deal with any adversity that is thrown our way.
I have hope as I look to the future

SCAPE: Art, Learning and Wellbeing16 February 2021
Today a team of Dudley students began a pilot programme looking at the relationship between Art, Learning and Wellbeing. Children visited the Swamp Dwellers art installation and then made light sensitive prints. In the afternoon Marisa Swanink - a History expert from Canterbury Museum guided our learners through Riccarton Bush researching the last remaining stand of Kahikatea trees in New Zealand. Josie Whelan and local artists will work with the children every fortnight during Term One at Tūranga. We are grateful for this opportunity sponsored by the Philipp Foundation. |

Welcome Back Everyone!
4 February 2021
Welcome back everyone. There was a buzz of excitement this morning as friends greeted each other and chatted about their holidays. We began the school year with a Mihi Whakatau to welcome all the new students and teachers to our school. The children then settled into their classes. Some even visited the Dental Nurse. Check out the photos of Day 1! What a happy bunch!
