Board Member - Kirk McKay
A little about myself and my family
Lynda and I have been married for 17 years and have 4 children. Our 2 oldest children, Daniel 10, and Joel 8, are both current pupils at Banks Avenue School. We also have 2 girls, Georgia who is 3 and attends the Shirley Kidsfirst Kindergarten and Grace, currently 3 months old and mainly eats, sleeps and smiles. We have lived in Christchurch for just over 11 years and just near the Palms since 2010, prior to that in Dunedin. Lynda is a registered nurse and worked in the operating theatre for Southern Cross prior to finishing up when Georgia was born. I have been working for myself as a business advisor for the last 11 years, specialising in business systems and processes, operational improvement, financial control, and commercial building management. |

Why did you join the Board of Trustees?
I enjoy seeing people using their individual skills to improve the lives of those around them. Schools are such a critical part of any community and I wanted to use what I had to offer to help our Banks Avenue School children and families succeed.
What position do you hold on the Board and how long have you been a member?
I have been on the board since April 2014 and hold the Deputy Chairperson and Finance roles.
What are some of the positive things you see happening around the Banks Avenue School Community?
I love the practical down to earth culture of the school that is reflected in the make-up of our school families. The dedication and care our teachers have for each child at school.
Are there areas, that as a member of the Board, you are keen to work on / develop?
I would like to see Banks Avenue School as one of the top primary schools in the city, for academic, sporting and creative achievement. That Banks Avenue School children would have a strong character and sense of identity. Developing strong governance in the BOT to ensure that every child can perform to their potential and become successful.
What excites you about the future of Banks Avenue School? Anything you have gained satisfaction/ enjoyment from?
As a result of the retirement of three outstanding Banks Avenue school leaders the Board has hired a new Principal and two new Deputy Principals over the last 12 months. This opportunity to create a new senior leadership team with handpicked skills is rarely experienced by a school. We have an exciting time ahead as we build a new school and implement modern teaching/learning practices that will give Banks Avenue School children a real advantage when they leave for further education.
